The “Committee Hates Mid-Majors” Theorists

Notable Fans: Saint Mary’s, Middle Tennessee…

Every year, it seems we have a new mid-major team that has a very impressive regular season record, but fails to make the tournament after losing in their conference tournament. It is at this point that we all brace for the incoming excuses and committee blaming that the fan bases will spew to explain the snub.

To these fans, the fact that the teams’ schedule isn’t that impressive is not a fault of the coach or the program, but rather a conspiracy meant to keep the power conference teams on their pedestal. Who cares if the Gaels lost all their quality games? They deserve to be in over a team that had to compete with the likes of Duke, UNC and Clemson.

I understand the appeal of mid-majors in the tournament, and everyone loves a Cinderella, but the tinfoil hats can turn a lovable mid-major into a team we wish nobody mentioned. Do power conference teams have the benefit of strong conference schedules to boost their resume? Yes. However, mid-majors have found a way to get at-large bids, and snubs are usually justified.
