Northwestern Basketball: What does the future look like at point guard?
Bryant McIntosh is graduating and Jordan Lathon just had his admission revoked. Who does Northwestern basketball turn to at the point guard position now?
Northwestern basketball is not having a fun offseason in regards to the point guard position. Everybody knew it would be difficult to replace Bryant McIntosh but the transfer of Isiah Brown coupled now with the loss of Jordan Lathon due to his revoked admission has made things extremely challenging moving forward. The unexpected nature of Lathon’s departure specifically is what has thrown a wrench into the future plans of the program.
Not only was Lathon projected to be the point guard for next season but also potentially the future face of the team. Per 247Sports Composite ranking, Lathon was a four-star recruit marked at No. 124 in the nation. This is obviously a tremendous loss for the program moving forward but that should not be dwelled upon. In order to succeed in 2018-19 and the years that follow, head coach Chris Collins and Co. need to change gears quickly to get started on filling the point guard position.
The options available are rather thin at the moment but a solution needs to be found relatively quickly. Even though the season is still several months away, the coaching staff needs to decide how they are going to fill the void.
If they are going to stick with a player currently on the roster, then the development of that player at the point guard position needs to start immediately. If they are going to test the transfer market, then time is running short as the top guards have either already committed or are narrowing their lists. Lastly, there might not be a long-term solution in either of the above options so analyzing the upcoming recruiting class is also vital.
