The stock for Villanova’s Jay Wright has risen high due to his recent national championships. Here are the best players that have ever played for the 20+ year head coach.

Sometimes timing can be everything when it comes to ranking and listing various subjects. That can certainly be said for head coaches, particularly with the main subject for this piece.

Around a month ago, I did a project ranking the top-25 active head coaches in college basketball right now. Jay Wright was ranked No. 3, which is shocking considering where the national perception was of him just a few years ago.

In the old Big East, Villanova Basketball was a good – but not great conference team for the most part, with Wright himself, viewed as a coach who couldn’t win in March. But after conference realignment, the Wildcats excelled in the new league, dominating the other nine teams.

In the past three years, the program has reached new heights. In 2016 and 2018 Villanova not only made it to the Final Four but won the national championship altogether. It was accomplished by a collection of talented freshmen combined with developed seniors, as well as elite coaching.

Even back to his days at Hofstra, Coach Wright has always shown a knack for being a quality game-planner and developer. It just took him cutting down the last nets for the national consensus to agree with that as well.

And while the level of talent has increased for the program as of late, there has always been some great players over the years for Wright. Here’s a list ranking the very best ones.
