Oregon Women Basketball: Ducks lead Team USA to 3×3 FIBA World Cup quarterfinals

USA advances to quarterfinals

Prior to playing Russia, the U.S. defeated Uganda, Iran and Andorra.

Against Uganda (on June 10), The red, white, and blue used a 16-3 run to break open a close game. The US ended up routing the African nation 22-9 as Hebard and Boley each tallied seven points.

Team USA routed their other two opponents as well. In their first game of the tourney, the Americans coasted to a 21-7 victory over Iran. Boley led the way with eight points while Hebard and Ionescu contributed five apiece.

Versus Andorra, the US took advantage of its size edge and jumped out to a 4-1 lead. They continued to pound the ball inside throughout the game, pushing the lead to 13-3 before taking a 21-6 win. Hebard had eight points and Gildon contributed six while Ionescu chipped in five.

The US will play Italy in the quarterfinals on June 12 at 4:05 a.m. EDT. Italy (3-1) finished second in Group A with a 3-1 record. The Italians dropped a 21-20 heartbreaker to Group A champion Czech Republic  (3-1) on Monday.   The Czech’s will open the quarters against Russia at 1:40 a.m. EDT. That game will be followed by Group D winner Spain (4-0) versus France (3-1), which finished second in Group B. And China (4-0), Group B winner, versus Group D runner-up Hungary (3-1).

The semifinals, bronze medal as well as the gold medal game will take place on June 12 as well.

Team USA is 23-2 all-time in the women’s 3 x 3 tournament. The Americans won the event in 2012 and 2014 and took bronze in 2016.
