NCAA Basketball: Will Reid Travis ultimately choose Kentucky or Villanova?
Kentucky Wildcats
Outgoing frontcourt players: Sacha Killeya-Jones, Tai Wynard, Wenyen Gabriel and Jarred Vanderbilt
Incoming frontcourt players: EJ Montgomery and Keldon Johnson
Returning frontcourt players: Nick Richards and PJ Washington
The incredibly young group of forwards showed their youth throughout the 2017-18 season. They showed flashes of greatness but ultimately couldn’t get past the Sweet Sixteen. It was a very crowded group, yet none of them could separate themselves from the rest.
For 95% of big men in college basketball, they wouldn’t dare consider transferring to Kentucky. But Travis could start at 99% of schools, so he’ll have no problem getting 30+ minutes a night with the Wildcats.
From his perspective, he’ll get to go with a team with Final Four expectations which is the opposite of where Stanford Basketball is right now. Coach John Calipari’s reputation of sending players to the NBA has to be appealing for a player who at the moment is on the fringes of even getting drafted. Travis would get plenty of chances in front of scouts on national television to showcase himself, rather than on an NIT team late-night on the west coast.
Travis would also represent the kind of player Kentucky rarely gets these days – a senior. Besides him being the kind of post scorer the team desperately needs, his leadership would be great for a team that will still be relatively young for next season.
