St. John’s Basketball: How will AD Anton Goff’s resignation impact the Red Storm?

Athletic Director Anton Goff has decided to leave the University. How will this move affect head coach Chris Mullin and St. John’s Basketball?
This past weekend, St. John’s Athletic Director Anton Goff announced his resignation after two years in Queens per a school press release. The move left many shocked as there were no signs that something may be brewing that would cause Goff to resign. The school announced that Associate Vice President for Athletics Kathleen Meehan will replace Goff until the school can find a replacement.
Goff, whose mother was also an athletic director at VCU and Virginia State, came to Queens after serving as the athletic director for the University of Hartford. In his time at St. John’s Goff did a lot to help build the athletics program to what it is today. His charisma and personality made him a favorite amongst fans as he was there at nearly every sporting event on campus.
Goff’s resignation will really impact the future of Red Storm basketball. He had voiced plans on renovating Carnesecca Arena to fans on twitter. These plans however never came to fruition which leaves many fans wondering what the future has in store for the small arena.
Goff frequently held chats with Red Storm fans via Twitter in which fans could ask him questions as a way to better the relationship between the fans and the athletic department. These chats created a sense of transparency which was beneficial to both parties. Goff was also always willing to talk to fans at games which is why he was such a fan favorite during his time in Queens.
While also being a fan favorite, Goff was also a huge fan of Chris Mullin and his staff. In times of trouble this past season, many fans voiced their negative thoughts about the former star turned coach. Some fans even demanded that Mullin is fired. To Goff’s credit, however, he never even seemed to contemplate the idea of firing Mullin.

With some fans running out of patience with the head coach who has not produced as expected in his three seasons as head coach, this next season will be crucial. With the school in search of a new athletics director, it will be interesting to see how a new face could impact Red Storm basketball in the coming years.
