Seton Hall Basketball has a ton of talent to replace for the 2018-19 season. Can rising junior Myles Powell carry the load even more?

Depending on how you look at it, Seton Hall Basketball either succeeded (making it to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row for the first time in over 20 years) or failed (didn’t make the Sweet Sixteen despite having the best talent the program has had in years). Either way, it’s time to turn a new page for the Pirates.

Four of the team’s leading scorers (Angel Delgado, Desi Rodriguez, Khadeen Carrington and Ismael Sonogo) are gone, taking with them much of Seton Hall’s production from this past year.

If you take into account the points, rebounds, and assists no two teams in the Big East lost overall production more than Seton Hall and Villanova. The Wildcats will be fine for next season though, bouyed by a great recruiting class and veteran stars. But that doesn’t mean that the Pirates will be battling DePaul in the conference basement as talent will be coming in.

First off, the Pirates have three solid class of 2018 three-star recruits (Jared Rhoden, Anthony Nelson, and Valdir Manuel) that should get some minutes in their freshmen years. Then comes a pair of transfers in Quincy McKnight and Taurean Thompson who after sitting out a year will be a big part of what Seton Hall does in the future.

But the biggest impact player for the team will be their leading returning scorer Myles Powell. After becoming a full-time starter his sophomore year, he finished third on the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg and tied for second with 2.8 apg. His shooting splits of 43-38-79 showed his efficiency as a true shooting guard and uplifted a Pirates team that in past years had issues on offense.

Powell will have a big role with Seton Hall next year, but at what position. The former four-star prospect was considered more of a point guard but Carrington had that spot locked up. There’s a good chance that the 6’2 rising junior could shift back to being the lead ball handler and facilitating the Pirates’ offense.

There are many who believe that Seton Hall will take a big drop in the Big East standings. But between the incoming transfers and recruits combined with Powell becoming the focal point of the offense, don’t be shocked if the Pirates remain in the NCAA Tournament picture, something their fans are starting to get used to.
