Duke Basketball: Best player ever to wear every Blue Devil jersey number
By Dakota Cox
No. 40: Marshall Plumlee (2013-2016)
The 40’s might not be as historic as the 30’s, but 40 is a solid pick with Plumlee. He might be the lesser-known of the brothers, but he was a leader and a key contributor. He helped his one-time teammates grow in their time as Duke.
No. 41: Matt Christensen (2000-2002)
Okay. If I missed a better player on this one, I apologize. I went through every player to ever play for Duke three separate times, and Christensen was the only player I could find to score over 100 points. If there’s someone else at this number, I just missed it.
No. 42: Elton Brand (1998-1999)
Brand won all the possible awards except for a championship. He did, however, take the Devils to the championship game as a leading scorer in his sophomore year. Brand is another one of the best players in Duke history, and definitely one of the best to not have their jersey number retired.
No. 43: Mike Gminski (1977-1980)
Gminski was one of Duke’s last greats before Coach K took over. He led his team to a Final Four appearance and averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds his senior year. He’s a lesser-known jersey retiree, but he was still a baller.
No. 44: Jeff Mullins (1962-1964)
Mullins averaged 21 points and 9 boards over his tenure. He averaged a double-double in his first season, and he helped Duke to back-to-back Final Four appearances. He also won an ACC Player of the Year honor. Many players have come and gone since Mullins, but none have done what he has to the number, and no one will after it being retired.
No. 45: Dan Meagher (1982-1985)
Dan Meagher was never a leading scorer, but this number wasn’t highly contested. He got high point and rebound totals despite low averages. If there was a quality player to wear this jersey for two seasons, they could take this spot. The fact remains that there isn’t a lot of good players to wear this number.
