There are freshmen who exceed their recruiting rankings every year. In terms of the 2018-19 Big East basketball season, who might be those players?

Big East basketball is experiencing a fair amount of roster turnover this offseason. Between seniors graduating and players leaving early for the NBA, a lot of familiar faces will no longer take the court next season. Because of the this, teams in the league will be much more reliant on newcomers (freshman and transfers) this season. After tackling my top-10 list of impact freshman, next up is looking at some under-the-radar incoming recruits.

In terms of how this article was created, there are two reasons why a player may be flying “under-the-radar.” For starters, recruiting rankings are often used as an indication of a player’s potential at the college level. Sometimes, though, these rankings greatly underrate a recruit compared to what he might bring in his first year on campus. Because of this, some players make this list despite being hyped online because of their low overall ranking.

In addition, some players are simply underhyped. Even though their ranking might be generally seen as high by recruiting services, there is very little discussion surrounding their potential impact. In this scenario, the player is underrated in the grand scheme of discussion rather than in terms of their scout rating. Of course, it is also possible that a player fits both of these categories.

Because of the nature of this article, there are also two ways to approach ranking these players. You could either: 1) rank based on potential impact as freshmen or 2) rank based on how underrated they are according to the criteria above. However, because the purpose of this article is to give attention to these players who have flown under the radar, I am placing this list in alphabetical order.

Before jumping into the list, I want to note that this only includes members of the 2018 recruiting class as defined by 247Sports. Therefore, Marquette’s Brendan Bailey, who is returning from a mission trip, is not included. For this list, I considered every recruit that was not mentioned in my top-10 impact freshmen list.
