Marquette Basketball: 3 reasons why the Golden Eagles will be better than Wisconsin in 2018-19
By Brian Foley
Marquette Basketball hosts Wisconsin on Dec. 8. Here’s why the Golden Eagles should not only win that game but also post a superior 2018-19 season.
Though they don’t share a conference, the Marquette-Wisconsin rivalry is one of the richest in college basketball. The series just hit its 100th-anniversary last year (UW won the first matchup 15-14) and this season’s contest will be the 125th matchup between the two programs.
Wisconsin owns a 67-57 advantage in the series all-time, and outside of a couple stretches where one school dominated the other, it has been a fairly even battle over the years. After UW lit up the then-Warriors for the first three-and-a-half decades of the rivalry to the tune of a 32-15 record, Marquette has actually battled back, earning a 42-35 ledger since 1950. Here is the decade-by-decade breakdown:
- 1910’s: Wisconsin (1-0)
- 1920’s: Wisconsin (4-1)
- 1930’s: Wisconsin (11-10)
- 1940’s: Wisconsin (16-4)
- 1950’s: Even (4-4)
- 1960’s: Even (7-7)
- 1970’s: Marquette (14-2)
- 1980’s: Even (5-5)
- 1990’s: Wisconsin (7-4)
- 2000’s: Wisconsin (6-4)
- 2010’s: Even (4-4)
The Golden Eagles have only captured one decade – unsurprisingly, it’s the 1970’s – but they have a chance to take the 2010’s with wins over the Badgers in each of the next two seasons. Luckily, Wojo has built his best group at the same time Wisconsin has slipped from its pedestal.
Here are three reasons why Marquette will not only beat Wisconsin in December but will also finish with a better 2018-19 campaign.
