Georgetown Basketball was better than many expected in Patrick Ewing’s first season. Now in Year two, can the Hoyas contend for an NCAA Tournament berth?

The Hoyas entered the 2017-18 season with extremely low expectations on the heels of two consecutive losing seasons to close the John Thompson III era, but new head coach Patrick Ewing quickly showed he had the chops to turn Georgetown around.

After going 10-1 in the non-conference portion of their schedule, Georgetown only managed to pick up five wins in Big East play – but lost three conference games in overtime and another three by five points or less.

Those results showed that this team was on the right track, and that has only raised expectations for Ewing’s second year.

Star big man Jessie Govan (17.9 ppg, 10.0 rpg) returns after testing NBA Draft waters and will be a preseason first-team All-Big East selection. In total, Georgetown is returning five of their top six scorers from last year’s team.

Ewing has also done work on the recruiting trail and is bringing in the program’s best recruiting class since 2015, headlined by the nation’s No. 90 overall recruit in point guard James Akinjo and social media dunking sensation Mac McClung.

The Hoyas are expecting to win several more games than their 15-15 record from a year ago. Will they be able to do it? Here’s a full preview for Georgetown’s upcoming season, including a full breakdown of the projected starters, key reserves, and non-conference schedule, along with where they stand nationally and in the conference.
