Season outlook for 2018-19

Georgetown is going to take a step forward this season. The only question is how big that step will be.

We know that Georgetown should at least replicate last season’s win total – the difference will be their ability to turn some of those close conference losses into wins this year. Added depth provided by Malinowski and this freshmen class should make a difference in that regard.

The Hoyas have athleticism, versatility, and experience. They have a legitimate collegiate star in Govan and two extremely promising freshmen in Akinjo and McClung. In fact, Georgetown’s season will likely be determined by just how dominant Govan can be and by how big of an impact those two freshmen can have.

If Govan becomes an All-American candidate and both Akinjo and McClung are starting by the end of the season, I think the Hoyas will become a serious NCAA Tournament threat. However, if Govan simply remains as one of the best players in the Big East and Akinjo and McClung need time to adjust to the college game, they will show progress but still won’t be relevant nationally.

I think Georgetown is going to fall somewhere in the middle. I expect Govan to take his game to another level and for the star freshmen duo to both make significant impacts, but be inconsistent in their contributions. The Hoyas are likely looking at a season in which they are on the fringe of the bubble conversation in February and March. Returning to postseason play in the NIT should be their goal.
