Will the team defense improve this season? That is the main question facing Marquette basketball heading into the new campaign. The Golden Eagles have had one of the worst Power 6 defenses in the country in each of the past few seasons and that has held the team back. And, even though there are clear personnel improvements defensively (Morrow and Chartouny), Coach Wojo still needs to prove that he can coach a competent defensive team.
If Marquette’s defense can occasionally make stops this season, then wins will certainly come because the offense will be there. Because of this major question mark, though, I think that many people are wary about ranking the Golden Eagles too high heading into the preseason. Regardless, Marquette has enough talent to be a top-25 team in the country if all goes according to plan.
Quite simply, an NCAA Tournament appearance is an absolute must this season. This is Coach Wojo’s best roster since taking over as the head coach of the program and missing the Big Dance could result in Marquette beginning a coaching search in the offseason. Coach Wojo’s seat is already fairly warm and he will definitely want to avoid another disappointing season.
With this being said, though, Marquette should be an NCAA Tournament team and a contender for the Big East title. The Golden Eagles have proven star power, returning depth, excellent incoming transfers, and some intriguing freshmen. That should be plenty to post a strong season.
Projections: 3rd in the Big East – No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
