Maryland Basketball received their first commitment of the 2020 recruiting class as four-star Bishop O’Connell High School (Va.) Guard Marcus Dockery made the announcement Thursday.
It’s never to early to build for the future. Maryland basketball got a head start on their 2020 recruiting class. Dockery chose the Terps over Georgetown, Seton Hall, La Salle University, Cincinnati, and others.
Marcus Dockery goes to the same school of former Maryland Point Guard Melo Trimble. Trimble led Maryland for three seasons (2014-17) averaging 15.9 points per game, 3.9 assists per game and 3.7 rebounds per game. Because of this connection, Maryland Basketball Head Coach Mark Turgeon may believe he can strike gold again and continue the tradition of recruiting talented point guards to the program.
Marcus Dockery has the speed and quickness to drive to the basket and his best asset is his ability to shoot the three-point shot. He is in his junior year now so he has more time to grow and develop as a basketball player. It’s hard to tell now what the roster make up will be two years from now but I would imagine with more high school and AAU games under his belt he’ll be ready to come in and fight for a starting spot.
Anthony Cowan Jr. may declare after this year so once Dockery arrives in College Park, he will be competing with
and
for playing time at either of the guard spots depending on Turgeon’s choice of rotation.
The only knock on Dockery really is his size at 165 pounds. He’ll need to gain more muscle mass to take college contact when driving the lane. Other than that, he has the necessary to skills to be a playmaker at the next level.
Getting a four-star recruit is a great start to a recruiting class for any program and Dockery will only get better as time goes on.
