A week of largely ordinary results led to a largely ordinary reveal of the AP Top 25 entering the second week of the NCAA Basketball season.

The first week of college basketball is in the books, which means the second AP Top 25 is in the papers.

Besides the epic Champions Classic on opening night, there weren’t many notable games to speak of during the first week of the season. Almost no teams in the AP poll lost last week to unranked teams, with the notable exception of West Virginia (more on that later).

As a result, very little changed in the AP poll, with the voters taking a measured approach. By and large, the same teams make up the 25 programs who were highlighted in the preseason.

Despite that, there was actually a change at the top of the rankings. What makes that development particularly surprising is that the top team from a week ago didn’t lose – in fact, they won against a team that was in the top ten!

The college basketball season isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Well, more like a half-marathon, as the postseason comes in a flash, already just four short months away. Between now and then, there will be plenty of fluctuations at the top of the rankings, the middle of the rankings, and the bottom of the rankings.

Until then, it’s all about taking the season one week at a time.

Happy poll watching!

Here are three thoughts on the latest AP poll, replete with mild fluctuations.
