Where do the Bulldogs rank among the “elites”?

Statistical deep-dives aside, it would be very tough to argue their belonging in this neighborhood of the sport’s elite if they cut the nets down this year.

You could stand to argue that the term “Blue Blood” is subjective and cyclical which is very fair, and if you notice some of the teams we brainstormed earlier on haven’t seen 1/10th of the success the Zags have recently, but their history has been written in ink and has since dried.  They’re safe.

Gonzaga has proven that they can win, build and recruit without missing a beat.

Maybe I’m being too inclusive, maybe I’m trying to tweak college basketball lure to be more modernized.  Maybe I’m campaigning for a team that was once the March sweetheart and trying to amplify their accomplishments against lesser opposition.

Maybe, maybe not.

All I know is that at the end of the day there’s something to be said about Mark Few and Gonzaga.  In 1989 a young man joined their staff as a Graduate Assistant and became its head coach a decade later.  20 seasons later?  That same man is a Hall of Fame caliber coach.

No longer ‘The Little Engine That Could’, Gonzaga is now a bonafide freight train.
