NCAA Basketball: Oregon and Purdue on wrong side of winners/losers this week

No. 5 Loser – NET Rankings
Bye, bye went the RPI rankings that were outdated and needed to be done away with. In came the NET rankings that were supposed to show the true value in a team. Instead, the first rankings came out and everyone wanted them gone. Ohio State was ranked number one. Ok, maybe we can understand because their strength of schedule and they had some good early wins.
The biggest complaint was Loyola Marymount was tenth and Belmont was 12th while Kentucky was way down at number 61. Kentucky has looked fairly average this year compared to their preseason ranking, but there is no way they should be that low while the aforementioned teams were that high.
Let’s not throw the rankings out just yet as they should balance themselves out, but this was not a good first impression.
No. 5 Winner – Roy Williams press conferences
We can always count Williams for speaking his mind after a game. Whether we agree or not it will be entertaining. The latest was after Michigan blew his team out on Wednesday night in the Big Ten/ACC challenge. The game was close in the first half before Michigan completely outplayed them in the second half. A half in which Williams sat his starters for about five minutes to prove a point.
“They played a heck of a lot better than we did, coached a heck of a lot better than we did. It’s very frustrating right now,” Williams said. “As a coach, I feel like I’ve done the worst job with this team in 31 years as a head coach.”
It was definitely an entertaining press conference and refreshing to hear a coach take part of the blame also instead of just throwing his team under the bus.
