NCAA Basketball: Oregon and Purdue on wrong side of winners/losers this week
By Adam Childs
No. 2 Loser – Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue was expected to take a step back this year, but with national player of the year candidate in Carsen Edwards returning they were still thought of as a top 25 team. They lost a tight game to Virginia Tech in the championship game of the Charleston Classic, but that was not a bad loss.
This week they lost to Florida State and Michigan, again neither on paper are bad losses. But the way they looked in their losses lands them on the losers list.
They led FSU by one late but could not put the game away with free throws and then turned the ball over late to lead to the Seminoles hitting a game-winning shot in the closing seconds. Then they went to Michigan and were never in the game. They were down nine before the first tv timeout and trailed by 16 at the half. They never threatened in the second half and the Wolverines coasted. Michigan has made a lot of teams look bad this year but the Boilermakers could have put up more of a fight.
No. 2 Winner – Lagerald Vick
Vick had a bad opening game against Michigan State where he only scored two points, but since then he has been a top scorer for Kansas. Included were back to back 30+ point games against Vermont and Louisiana.
But nothing could compare to what he did to help the Jayhawks avoid being upset by Stanford. With Kansas down three late in the game Vick hit a three to send the game into overtime. He then scored the first eight points in the extra period to help secure the win. He was almost off the team earlier this year and instead has turned it around and now is an invaluable part of the team. With performances like the end of the Stanford game, Vick is a very exciting player to watch.
