2. Kansas Jayhawks

Last Week: No. 1

It was nearly impossible last week to choose between Kansas and Gonzaga for the No. 1 spot in my power rankings. In the end, I chose the Jayhawks based on their quality of play and number of elite wins. But after Kansas needed overtime to defeat Stanford at home and Gonzaga defeated Creighton on the road, it seemed prudent to switch the two schools for this week. This does not mean, though, that the Jayhawks are not capable of being the top team in the country because they clearly are and anyone can put them at No. 1 without any issues.

At 6-0, Kansas is one of the few undefeated teams remaining in the nation and they also can already boast four major conference wins: Michigan State (N), Marquette (N), Tennessee (N), and Stanford (H). It is hard to argue with their group of wins even though they did need overtime to win the latest two. The Jayhawks have plenty of talent to compete for the national title this season and, considering the youth of the roster (especially the backcourt), they should only improve over the course of the year.

To this point, the unheralded star that is Lagerald Vick has led the Jayhawks. Behind 59.6% shooting from 3-point range (on 7.8 3PA per game), the senior guard is leading the team in scoring at 20.8 points per game. Additionally, Dedric Lawson has been an extremely important part of the team’s success to this point with his double-double averages of 18.8 points and 11.2 rebounds.
