23. Houston Cougars

Last Week: Unranked

One of my favorite teams coming into this season, Houston has performed admirably to this point. Even though Rob Gray is no longer running the show, head coach Kelvin Sampson has his team playing at a very high level and it is showing in the standings. The Cougars are one of the only undefeated teams left in the nation at 6-0 and they have a couple of nice wins on their resume over BYU and Oregon.

And while Houston’s identity starts on the defensive end, their guards can fill up the basket in a hurry. Most notably, Corey Davis Jr. (18.7 points) and Armoni Brooks (15.3 points) are leading the team in scoring while absolutely letting it fly from beyond the 3-point arc. Both players attempt more than eight trifectas per game. As a team, the Cougars are hitting on 37.2% of their 3-point attempts.

Looking ahead, Houston is about to enter a very difficult stretch. Over a 12-day stretch before the holidays, the Cougars will face Oklahoma State, LSU, Saint Louis, and Utah State all in a row. If Houston is able to make it through this stretch at 3-1 somehow, they will start to receive a lot more national attention than they are right now.
