NCAA Basketball Power Rankings: Michigan, Texas Tech climb further
22. Iowa State Cyclones
Last Week: Unranked
Iowa State’s record stands at 6-1 despite the fact that Lindell Wigginton (injury), Cameron Lard (suspension), and Zoran Talley (suspension) have combined to play just 24 minutes. Once all of these players return to action, the Cyclones have the potential to quickly rise up these rankings. Head coach Steve Prohm, even without three of his top players, is still trotting out a 10-man rotation and it is clear that this team is extremely deep.
Iowa State’s only loss to this point came at the hands of Arizona at the Maui Invitational but the team rebounded well with double-digit wins over Illinois and San Diego State in the following rounds. The Cyclones also recorded a home win over Missouri in the second game of the season. Looking ahead at the rest of non-conference play, Iowa State has a tough challenge ahead with a road bout against their rivals in Iowa. If they find a way to win that game, the Cyclones could enter Big 12 play at full strength while carrying an 11-1 record.
In the absence of the key trio mentioned above, UVA transfer Marial Shayok has emerged as an offensive star. He is the leading scorer on the team at 19.3 points per game while Michael Jacobson (17.0 points) and Talen Horton-Tucker (14.9 points) follow closely behind. One of the more balanced teams in the nation, Iowa State currently ranks in the top-100 in most points scored per game and least points per game allowed.
