NCAA Basketball Power Rankings: Michigan, Texas Tech climb further
21. Villanova Wildcats
Last Week: No. 23
Villanova might be the most unpredictable team in the country right now. In the preseason, the Wildcats were projected to be a top-15 team in the nation. Then, after back-to-back embarrassing home performances against Michigan and Furman, they fell all the way out of the top-25. Soon thereafter, the ‘Cats rejoined the rankings following two big wins over Oklahoma State and Florida State.
And then they almost lost to winless La Salle. Yes, they ended up winning the game and staying in the rankings but it was not pretty at all. Unlike the past few seasons, Villanova is incredibly inconsistent and needs time to develop into the Big East favorite that we thought they would be. Perhaps most notably, freshmen Jahvon Quinerly and Cole Swider are apparently not quite ready to play big minutes.
Head coach Jay Wright is bound to figure his team out soon but it is clearly taking more time than many expected. Seniors Phil Booth and Eric Paschall have been solid to this point and Collin Gillespie has been a surprising breakout player. But it seems like the rest of the roster needs time.
