NCAA Basketball: Top 10 mid-majors from first month of 2018-19 season
3. Davidson Wildcats 7-1
Davidson is 7-1 and their lone loss came at the hands of No. 23 Purdue in the semifinals of the Charleston Classic. The Wildcats knocked off Wichita State in the first round to set up the matchup with Purdue. Bob McKillop’s squad also has back-to-back wins over Colonial favorite Northeastern and a 20-point win over Charlotte.
The Wildcats are led by their guard duo of sophomore Kellan Grady and junior Jon Axel Gundmundsson. Grady is averaging 19.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, but the straw that stirs the drink for the Wildcats is Gudmundsson. The 6-4 native of Iceland is 2nd on the team in scoring (19.0) and leads them in rebounding (5.9) while being the team’s leading assist man with 4.6 per game. The team has gotten a nice boost from freshman big man Luka Brajkovic, the 6-10 Austrian is the team’s 2nd leading rebounder with 5.5 per contest but he also adds 10.8 points while shooting 55.4% from the field and 79.3% from the free throw line.
The rest of December sees the Wildcats host Winthrop and have a neutral site contest with Temple before going on the road to face a couple of ACC teams in Wake Forest and North Carolina.
