Duke Basketball: 5-star class of 2019 big man Vernon Carey Jr. commits
By Bryan Mauro
What is next for Duke?
Duke has now gotten their prized recruits in the last three seasons. They are on fire on the recruiting trail and have some of the best talent in the entire country. How could they improve, and where could they possibly go now? Coach K has many avenues to explore going forward into the 2019 recruiting cycle.
The first option is hope that still uncommitted big man Isaiah Stewart commits to the Blue Devils. If Stewart were to commit to the Blue Devils, Coach K would most likely explore some lineups like what he did last season with Bagley and Wendell Carter both roaming around the paint. Stewart does have that kind of athleticism to roam the paint like Carter did, and would provide the Blue Devils one of the best frontcourts in the country.
Coach K would be just fine with the class he has coming in, even if he does not add to it. He already has his guard committed for 2019 with Boogie Ellis, they currently have a player from the 2018 class who is redshirting in Joey Baker, and he has already secured a wing scorer in Wendell Moore. The Blue Devils are perennially a top five team for a reason.
If Coach K does not want to sit on this class and potentially try to add but does not get Stewart. He will direct his attention toward forward Matthew Hurt. Hurt is a stretch forward who is a good shooter. It remains unknown when Hurt will announce or who he will announce his commitment to.
His recruitment has been nothing short of a mystery to virtually anyone. Regardless of what steps Duke takes next after the commitment of Carey, they are going to be in good hands for at least the next year.
