The in-state rivalry between Wisconsin and Marquette is renewed for another year as the Badgers will travel to play the Golden Eagles in a battle of teams that know each other real well.

TV Schedule: Saturday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m. ET FOX

Arena: Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, WI

Wisconsin and Marquette seem to be on an every other year for winning this annual game. Going back to Wisconsin’s back-to-back final four run is the last time a team won in consecutive years. Marquette took it the year after, Wisconsin got them in 2016 as the Golden Eagles won last season when nothing went right for the Badgers.

The match up between these two teams usually gets the state divided. Everyone always grow up Wisconsin Badger fans, but when they play Marquette, there’s deciding to be done. Usually the Golden Eagles will attract people who live in the Milwaukee area and alumni. Some absolutely can’t stand each other and while there are people who will root for an in-state team to do well.

They also get into recruiting battles. Both feel like they have equal shots at getting in-state talent. Marquette has always been the high energy, shoot a lot team while Wisconsin is the slow it down, make passes, find the open shot, pass one more time and score. They also stress defense more than offense.

There have been countless times where players have chosen to go to Marquette over Wisconsin. One in particular that stands out to me was Vander Blue in 2011. He was a top-50 recruit from Madison and went to Memorial High School. It was a big deal with his recruiting process at the time. He ultimately chose Marquette which really made the rivalry heat up.

There will be probably five guys from the state of Wisconsin getting playing time during the game. There would’ve been six if Trevor Anderson hadn’t needed knee surgery done which was announced earlier this week.
