NCAA Basketball: Kansas No. 1 in AP Top 25, Buffalo makes MAC history
The fall of Gonzaga enabled the rise of Kansas to the NCAA Basketball AP Top 25’s top spot, marking the biggest movement in a week full of it.
We have a new No. 1 in the AP Top 25!
After several weeks of debate pitting Gonzaga against Kansas for the poll’s top spot, Kansas finally earned it out in the Week 6 poll – well, it’s more that the Bulldogs threw it away.
Losing a close game to the new No. 3 team in the country (Tennessee) might not have warranted the loss of the top ranking for Gonzaga. But it’s hard to shift the views of voters who believe a team can’t stay No. 1 after suffering a defeat.
The Jayhawks didn’t lose last week, so the undefeated program slid into the top spot.
While Kansas is new to the top spot from a week ago, this is not their first stint atop the rankings this season: they started the year as the country’s top banana.
There was movement across the top four spots, with Duke moving up to No. 2, Tennessee at No. 3, and Gonzaga falling back to No. 4 following their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Vols.
Michigan stayed put to round out the top five.
New teams to the AP Top 25 this week include Marquette (No. 21), Houston (24), Indiana (25), and Syracuse (25) – there’s a three-way tie for No. 25, with faltering Kansas State joining the trio.
Meanwhile, Maryland and Nebraska both dropped from the rankings, just a week after joining them in the first place.
Here are three thoughts on this week’s AP Top 25.
