3. Red Storm approaching…eventually

There are nine undefeated teams left in the country. Eight of them are ranked in this week’s AP Top 25.

The St. John’s Red Storm are not.

They’re not even the first team knocking on the door of the rankings. Their 57 votes place them all the way at 32nd in the country, not even in a reasonable range to crack the rankings next week.

St. John’s isn’t ranked because their 9-0 record comes courtesy of an incredibly weak schedule.

They’ve only won three games against major conference teams, each arguably the worst squad in their respective conference: Rutgers, California, and Georgia Tech; the latter two victories came by exactly three points each.

The Red Storm’s lone game this week is against vaunted NEC foe Wagner. Again, not going to push St. John’s much closer to the AP Top 25, even if they win by 60 points.

The following two games are against St. Francis (Brooklyn) and Sacred Heart. Talk about a weak non-conference schedule.

The only redeeming non-conference game on their entire schedule doesn’t come until February when they’ll look to repeat last year’s upset of Duke.

Until then, Shamorie Ponds and the rest of the Red Storm will remain in place, working against the tides of an unappealing schedule.
