There are 353 D-I NCAA Basketball programs, each of them with a head coach leading their program. How would we rank all of these head coaches and which coaches stand out more than others?
Each and every NCAA Basketball season brings new headlines and new stars into the fold. We remember names like Adam Morrison, Tyler Hansbrough, and Kris Jenkins, but they all eventually graduate and move on. Every program features a completely new set of players every four years, but there’s one constant for some programs: the coaches.
There are all sorts of head coaches in today’s game, a combination of living legends and young guys just getting their careers started. There have been many attempts to rank some of the greatest (or worst) coaches in college basketball, though most of these lists just focus on a few select coaches. This article will examine and attempt to rank every single one of those 353 head coaches.
Devising a methodology to rank all of them is virtually impossible, so the following was used as a baseline. Certain statistics such as career winning percentage, NCAA Tournament success, conference championships, and expectations for the 2018-19 season were all taken into account. There may be some coaches who seem too high or too low, but any coach can see a drastic change in the ranking with one good or bad season. Most information was gathered from Sports Reference and future projections were taken from KenPom’s ratings.
