Houston Cougars

Houston entered this season as one of the favorites to win the American Athletic Conference. And, through the first month of the season, it is easy to see why. Even without former star Rob Gray Jr., who graduated after last season, the Cougars are undefeated through 10 contests because of their elite defensive play. Houston is holding opponents to ~60 points per game so far this season and they have the offensive weapons to battle with just about anyone.

Most notably, Armoni Brooks and Corey Davis Jr. have taken the offensive reins so far this season as scorers absolutely light up defenses from beyond the arc. These two project as the top contributions for the rest of the season while Houston’s freshman, Nate Hinton and Cedrick Alley Jr., should only improve over the course of the year. The ceiling of this team has is still yet to be determined as they just keep winning games.

During this past week, the Cougars landed a couple huge home wins over LSU and Saint Louis. Both of these opponents project as future NCAA Tournament teams and greatly improve Houston’s early-season resume. With Utah State still left on the non-conference schedule, Houston also has one more opportunity for a resume-builder prior to AAC play.

Next. Power Rankings entering the week. dark

Due to final exams and the holiday season approaching, there were not a ton of high-profile games during this past week. Regardless, though, these teams all posted strong wins that improve their future NCAA Tournament resumes. Where might they land in bracketology projections moving forward? We will soon find out (my non-conference update is coming soon).
