Iowa Basketball beat UNI in their last match-up in the Hy-vee Classic for the foreseeable future and made Iowa a Hawkeye state this year.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have started the 2018-19 season (8-2) after their victory versus in-state rival UNI Panthers.

The Hawkeyes were able to use their size to beat the Panthers 77-54, in a blowout win. The game was over in the first few minutes after the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 18 point lead early. This could be the last time these two teams match-up in non-conference play for the foreseeable future.

Saturday night’s game was a part of the Hy’Vee classic, which was created in the 2012-13 season. The Hy’Vee Classic brings in-state rivals Iowa State Cyclones, Drake Bulldogs, and UNI Panthers into Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. In the seven years since the Classic was created, the Hawkeyes have gone (6-1) versus the Panthers.

When Dargan Southard from the Des Moines Register asked Drake athletic director Brian Hardin about the Hy’Vee Classic’s future he replied, “I don’t see anything in the foreseeable future — such as the next two or three years — for an opportunity for our teams to get on to the court.”

The Big Ten conference has decided to change their schedule to twenty conference games in a year. Because of this change the Hawkeyes have twenty-two committed games every year, making the Hy’Vee Classic difficult to commit too.

The Hawkeyes also beat in-state rival Iowa State Cyclones on Thursday, December 6. These two in-state rival wins has the Hawkeyes owning the state of Iowa in basketball this year. Hawkeye fans can officially say it’s a Hawkeye state.

Even though the game got out of hand early, there were some takeaways from Saturday night’s action.
