Unheralded junior Marcus Bagley is starting to make a name for himself in the recruiting circles. Can Cal Basketball get the inside track on the wing prospect?
2020 prospect Marcus Bagley, who is the brother Sacramento Kings rookie Marvin Bagley, has gotten off to a good start to his junior campaign and is now starting to draw interest from major colleges once again. Bagley has recently flown under the radar until now as he is at his third high school in the last three years while also having dealt with injuries in the past.
The 6-foot-8 wing currently holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, UNLV, Portland, Pacific, and USC. Apparently, those schools have cooled off on him a little as Bagley told 247 Sports Josh Gershon that he has been just talking to a Northern California school.
"“I’ve been talking to Cal and that’s pretty much it right now.”"
The three-star prospect, per ESPN, started his high school career at Sierra Canyon in Chatswick (Calif.). But when Marvin chose to attend Duke, he and his family moved across the country to North Carolina where he did not play high school basketball. Now that Marvin is back in California with the Kings, the family is back out west where Bagley is currently attending Sheldon in Sacramento.
Bagley, who has dealt with knee tendinitis in the past, possesses a versatile game. He is a good shooter with decent range, and he also has the ability to play in the post. In addition, Bagley has good ball skills and likes to get out and run as he is an electric finisher.
He was averaging 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and one steal a game through the first four games of the season at Chatswick. He was shooting 38 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc. Bagley also produced two double-doubles and scored in double-figures in each of the four games, which includes pumping in 27 points against Branson on Dec. 7.
Cal has already signed three players for next year with four-star shooting guard Charles Smith IV leading the way. Three-star point guard Joel Brown and three-star power forward D.J. Thorpe also have signed LOI’s. The Golden Bears, who have won three of four to improve to 5-6 on the season, have no seniors on its 2018-19 season. Meanwhile, six of the Bears players on this year’s roster are freshmen which includes two walk-ons.
Cal is projected to have two scholarships available for the 2020 season. They currently have 18 open offers, according to Verbal Commits. Five-star Joshua Christopher appears to be the Golden Bears top target in the class, but they also have offered other five-star prospects Jalen Green, Kyree Walker, Johnny Juzang, Ziarre Williams, Greg Brown, and RJ Hampton.
