2. Determine the tertiary scorer
As already mentioned, Juwan Morgan and Romeo Langford are the go-to offensive stars for Indiana. While exhibiting usage rates of 23.4% (Morgan) and 26.6% (Langford), respectively, these two are accounting for 42.7% of Indiana’s total scoring to this point in the year. And while these two players are obviously incredible, the Hoosiers will struggle in games where even one of them is off their game. Because of this, defining the tertiary scoring option on the team would be a great development for the team.
At the end of non-conference play, four different Hoosiers are averaging between 7-9 points per game: Justin Smith (8.8), Aljami Durham (8.5), Devonte Green (8.1), and Rob Phinisee (7.3). In order for this team to reach its full potential, one of these players should emerge as a consistent double-digit scorer in conference play. In my opinion, the most likely candidate is Smith, and that is not just because he is currently the leading scorer of this group. With his versatility as a scorer both inside and out at 6-foot-7, he can be a difficult matchup for a lot of teams.
Of course, there is very little wrong with the preexisting committee attack for tertiary scoring. This allows for one of those individuals to step up on any given night depending on the opponent on the schedule. Due to the versatility that each of the players above brings to the table, head coach Archie Miller could use a specific member of his rotation to attack his opponent’s weakness each night.
Having said this, though, seeing one of those four consistently step up on a nightly basis would take this team to the next level.
