Best Performance, Team – San Francisco Dons

There were several good, but great, options for this honor over the past week, so instead of trying to figure out the best representative amongst a group of pretty good candidates, I decided to take this opportunity to discuss the season the San Francisco Dons have been having.

On Saturday, the Dons defeated Stanford 74-65, with four players finishing in double-figures. The Cardinal aren’t quite a stellar Power Five school this season, but the win is still emblematic of the year San Francisco has had so far.

SF is 12-1, with their only loss so far coming to fellow mid-major darling Buffalo. They’ve defeated Harvard, Stephen F. Austin, Cal (by 19!), Stanford, and their first of two dates with Gonzaga is looming on Jan. 12.

If the Dons want to make the West Coast Conference a two-bid league this year (much to Saint Mary’s chagrin), then they will probably have to take one of the two against the Zags.

Honorable mention goes to SFA’s one-point, Shannon Bogues’ buzzer-beating win over Baylor, Santa Clara’ overtime win over USC, Fresno State’s destruction of Cal, Kent State’s three-point win over Oregon State, Indiana State’ victory over Colorado, and San Diego AND New Mexico State defeating Washington State.
