3. Shamorie Ponds – St. Johns

The St. Johns Red Storm enter Big East conference play undefeated. Aside from the 12-0 start to the season, the Red Storm already had lofty expectations as a top half Big East team. The conference is wide open this year and any one can take the crown. The undefeated record will be challenged early in the conference slate. The Red Storm open the season with another surprising team with a game at Seton Hall. The matchup of guards in that game is going to be something to see as both players for each team can fill up a score sheet. Fans clamor for these types of matchups in conference play. Usually they do not happen to kick off the conference.

Shamorie Ponds is one of the best guards in the country and one of the top players in the entire conference. The Red Storm junior has been playing at a high level since he arrived on campus in Queens. The guard is a native of Brooklyn. NY and has already seen his name littered all over the St. Johns record book. The junior is an elite scorer and arguably the player who means the most to his team. Without the guard on the roster St. Johns would struggle both in the league and out of the league.

Ponds along with the other two players yet to be listed in these rankings are the three players who have the best chance to win this award. The race is going to be close between those three players for the remainder of the year. The junior is relied upon to win games most times by himself for the Red Storm basketball team and has already bailed St. Johns out of many potential losses already this season.

Ponds already has multiple 20-point games this season, a 37-point game and a double-digit assist game. These games are not an anomaly and are becoming more of the normal for the New York native. One the offensive end he is elite, the junior at times is also an elite defender and can pile up a ton of rebounds and steals quickly. If Ponds can continue his high level of play St. Johns will live up to the expectations. One thing to keep in mind with the Red Storm is the schedule they have played is what some may consider soft. The question remains if Ponds can maintain his high level of play against an uptick in competition. Red Storm fans will find out soon.
