NCAA Basketball: 5 coaches on the hot seat entering conference play
By Brian Rauf
3) Danny Manning, Wake Forest
Another ACC coach on the list, Manning would be ranked even higher if it wasn’t for his contract. Following an NCAA Tournament bid in 2017, Wake Forest gave Manning a six-year extension a few games into the 2017-18 season.
The best part? That extension came after a 1-4 start in which the Demon Deacons lost to the likes of Georgia Southern, Liberty, and Drake.
That is essentially how Wake Forest has played over the last year and a half. They went just 11-20 a season ago with just four conference wins, and they currently sit at 6-4 with losses to Houston Baptist and Richmond on their resume. KenPom ranks them as the worst team in the ACC by over 50 spots nationally.
That NCAA Tournament season is the only one under Manning in which the Demon Deacons won more than 13 games and they appear to be set for a similar year. Even with the likes of five-star big man Jaylen Hoard, Manning has not been able to maintain any kind of success in Winston-Salem.
Right now, the buyout looks like the only thing that can save Manning – especially with UNC-Greensboro’s Wes Miller looking like a prime option to replace him.
