4. Gregg Marshall, Wichita State coach
Marshall’s name seems to come up whenever there is a major program with a coaching vacancy and I’m sure UCLA will at least give him a look. He has turned Wichita State into one of the premier mid-major programs in the country, winning at least 25 games every year since 2009 and making seven straight NCAA Tournaments, including their Final Four run in 2013.
Of course, there’s the question of if Marshall would entertain UCLA’s advances. He has spurned other high-profile jobs in the past and seems happy to finish out his coaching career at Wichita a la Mark Few at Gonzaga. Plus, Marshall’s already making a good deal of money ($3.5 million annually).
Marshall also doesn’t have any ties to the West Coast which would make recruiting more difficult for him – and he already has more of a focus on player development than a recruiting. He’s a good enough coach to warrant consideration but the fit would be a little awkward.
