7) Shamorie Ponds deserves more National Player of the Year consideration
Ponds was one of the college basketball’s best returning players coming into the year and has done nothing but flourish as a junior, averaging 20.4 points, 6.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game while leading St. John’s to a 14-1 record.
Early on in the year, Ponds was putting up great numbers but the Johnnies were beating inferior competition, even if Ponds was making clutch plays all the time late in close games.

He was at it again on Saturday, coming up with this game late in the Red Storm’s overtime win over Georgetown.

Now, all of Ponds’ heroics appear to have built on themselves and garnered him some more national notoriety. And, as St. John’s continues to win, more and more people are taking him seriously when discussing the National Player of the Year.
It’s going to be a lot of fun to see what he can do Tuesday at Villanova.
