Several teams are taking advantage of the wide open Pac-12 basketball race with strong starts to conference play. How do all the contenders stack up?
We knew the Pac-12 basketball season would be wide open given what we saw from teams in conference play, and that has proven to be the case.
Seven teams – over half the conference – are now .500 or better in conference play and three teams remain undefeated. On the flip side, the teams at the bottom have been bad, as both Washington State and Cal remain winless.
Arizona State has fallen back to the pack with a 2-2 Pac-12 record following a stellar non-conference campaign, yet their struggles have not set the conference back as many thought it would. Why? Other teams are stepping up.
UCLA has risen from the dead after firing Steve Alford, going 3-1 under interim head coach Murry Bartow. That only loss came to Oregon State, who is 4-0 in conference play for the first time in what feels like forever.
They join Washington and Arizona (which, surprise, the Wildcats are still good despite losing all five starters) atop the conference standings, and all three have their sights set on doing enough to earn an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.
