Rankings in the NET and predictive metrics

This is where Wisconsin’s resume really excels at this point in time. Despite struggling tremendously in recent weeks, the Badgers have still managed to make every game a close one and that has impacted their rankings in the NET as well as predictive metrics. And considering these are two most of the most important/objective portions of the selection process, the Badgers have to be happy with their current placement.

To give a quick summary, here is where Wisconsin ranks in the most important metrics (as of Jan. 16):

  • NCAA Evaluation Tool: No. 19
  • Strength of Record: No. 36
  • Basketball Power Index: No. 15
  • KenPom: No. 16
  • KPI Sports: No. 37
  • Sagarin: No. 22

In my opinion, these numbers really put this season into perspective for Wisconsin fans. Traditionally speaking, any team with rankings consistently within the top-60 of the nation have a decent shot to secure at-large bids (40-60 as bubble teams) and the Badgers rank much better than that in each of these systems. Quite simply, despite the recent struggles, Wisconsin still settles in the No. 5-8 seed range very solidly from a numbers perspective.

Of course, though, there is more to securing a high seed in the Big Dance than just impressing the computers.
