After a 7-0 run early by the Terps, the game went back and forth in the first half. Maryland basketball was hot from the three-point line, and Ohio State struggled from out there. Even still, the game was tied at 18 with 10:10 to go in the first half.
At the 5:37 mark, the Terps went on an 8-0 run sparked by a Jalen Smith three-pointer. The Terps had a 38-30 lead. The Buckeyes’ Duane Washington took over and brought them within four points, 42-38 under a minute to go.
The Terps finished the half with a 45-38 lead behind a balanced effort in scoring. At the break, Bruno Fernando, Smith and Darryl Morsell had eight points. Eric Ayala had six points, and Anthony Cowan Jr. had five points to go along with five assists and four rebounds.
For the Ohio State Buckeyes, Duane Washington was their leading scorer with 11 points followed by C.J. Jackson’s eight points.
Halftime was what the Buckeyes needed because they came out fast and efficient on both ends causing a Maryland basketball timeout 2:20 into the second half.
A Morsell three-pointer gave the Terps a 48-44 lead and from there Cowan Jr. and Fernando took over. At the 9:29 mark, the Terps had a 62-53 lead.
In crunch time, under five minutes to go, Maryland was ahead 68-56, and the Ohio State Buckeyes could not make any shots. The Terps defense made it difficult to get any good looks.
