Gonzaga remains the clear-cut favorite in WCC Basketball this season. But which team is most likely to take the No. 2 spot going forward?

We’re midway through the 2018-19 WCC Basketball season, with all 10 teams playing either eight or nine games out of the newly created 16-game schedule. The Gonzaga Bulldogs remain perfect with an 8-0 record, with a margin of victory over 20 ppg. Then there is Portland at the very bottom at 0-9, three games behind while being one of 10 NCAA Basketball teams with a win in league play.

As far as teams 2-9, there’s a clear separation right in the middle. BYU, San Francisco, and Saint Mary’s have, for the most part, defeated the teams in the bottom half of the WCC. LMU, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, and San Diego have been beating up on another (and Portland) for the most part, while Pacific has been very competitive despite their current 9th place spot.

There is a great chance that Gonzaga will go unbeaten in both the regular season and the conference tournament, with the WCC likely ending up being a one-bid league for the NCAA Tournament. However, both San Francisco and Saint Mary’s still have opportunities to get the signature wins needed to get on the right side of the bubble.

Those two teams also are competing for that coveted second seed for the WCC Tournament. The new format now has the top two seeds getting the double-bye into the semifinals. With the Bulldogs all but guaranteed to get the first spot, the No. 2 position is huge – with a few teams fighting for it.

Which team is most likely getting that seed? And what else is going on in the WCC that’s newsworthy? Here are the latest takeaways from the league.
