UNC-Greensboro Spartans – NET ranking (53)
After winning 15 of their last 16 games, the Spartans were headed into this past week with a major opportunity to get themselves in the thick of the bubble conversation.
Despite having 22 total wins and being second in one of the top mid-major conferences in college basketball (Southern Conference), UNC-Greensboro had no quality wins on their resume outside of a victory at home over Furman. But with two road bouts at both Furman and Wofford (safely in the tournament at the moment) on the schedule, the SoCon could’ve been in position for up to three bids for the Big Dance.
But the unbeaten Terriers had no desire to help out, beating UNC-Greensboro by 30 points on Saturday. Add it with the 10-point defeat at Furman as well, and the Spartans have eliminated themselves from at-large contention. It’s true that none of their five losses are bad at all but even with a weak bubble, a win over Furman isn’t enough to warrant a bid.
There’s not much else UNC-Greensboro can do at this point but just win their last four regular season games and make it to the finals of the SoCon Tournament. If they lose to Wofford in that scenario, there’s an outside shot that the Spartans can get in with 29 total wins. If that happens, they’ll have to convince folks that they’re good enough via the eye-test to warrant a bid.
