Mid-Major Bracketology

It was a busy week for mid-major bracketology results. Gonzaga and Nevada remain mortal locks, but everyone else’s spot is up for grabs…

…including Buffalo. The Bulls should be in the field, although you never know with the committee when it comes to mid-majors, but strong wins at Akron and Toldeo helped their case this week.

Wofford absolutely annihilated UNC-Greensboro 80-50. The Terriers are about as in as a team from a historically one-bid league can be. With a chance for another strong win at Furman this week, Wofford could enter the conference tournament with a 26-4 record and a perfect 18-0 in SoCon play.

If they then lost to one of Furman, UNC-G, or ETSU in the semifinals or finals, the committee would be given a chance to prove their commitment to helping out mid-majors. #twobidsocon

Poor UNC-G also lost at Furman 67-57, boosting the Paladins’ resume and almost assuredly ending their own. The Spartans would probably have to win out, including a SoCon tournament title, to go dancing.

Liberty turned in an impressive revenge performance by traveling to Nashville and handing Lipscomb their first ASUN loss of the season and first loss of any kind since December with a 74-66 win.

The Bisons are still in a good position with their 30ish NET ranking and strong out-of-conference wins, but the rubber match with the Flames looms in the distance. A loss in the conference tournament to anyone but Liberty, and even a loss to Liberty in the title game could knock the Bisons out of March Madness.

Next. Biggest takeaways of the week. dark

VCU headed to Dayton and pulled out a hard-fought 69-68 win against a solid Flyers squad, putting the A10 leaders one step closer to securing a bid. The Rams and the Davidson Wildcats seem to be the only true A10 at-large hopefuls.
