While the results may have ended up being as predicted, WCC Basketball games were tighter than expected. Here are some key takeaways from the league.

The battle for second place in WCC Basketball is heating up between San Francisco, Saint Mary’s and BYU. While all three teams are likely out of contention for an at-large bid, there’s still a grand prize if any can finish right behind Gonzaga for the two seed in Las Vegas.

That’s because of the new format for this year’s conference tournament. The top two seeds are given byes until the semifinals on Monday, while the others have to come and play on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday. And considering how competitive the middle-tier of the WCC is (more on that later), not having to play a game can be crucial in the hopes of making it to Tuesday for the chance at the automatic bid.

With just a game in the loss column separating each other, the Cougars, Dons, and Gaels each had two games against teams in the bottom six of the standings. And even though there were some close calls and a couple of overtimes were needed last weekend, all three teams stood tall with a pair of wins. They along with Gonzaga went 2-0 and created a clear separation between them and the rest of the WCC.

Both it wasn’t that easy, and with last week showed is that just maybe, the Bulldogs shouldn’t be handed the WCC Tournament titles just yet. But who could beat them?
