No. 11 seed: Belmont Bruins

Another matchup and another Ohio Valley team looks primed to pull an upset. Belmont was one of the last teams to the make the NCAA tournament but got a matchup that they should be able to win. Belmont was defeated by Murray State in their conference tournament title game, and many thought they would be on the outside looking in come Selection Sunday. However, they received their bid and they are going to make the most of it.

Belmont has a team that can make a run to the second weekend as Belmont beat UCLA in Westwood this year. Even though UCLA had a dreadful season, for a program like Belmont to secure that victory was a huge step in the right direction. Belmont is looking for their second NCAA tournament win in their school’s history and this will be the ninth game in the program’s history. Dylan Windler is the best player you have never heard of. He is a very efficient scorer and rebounder. Windler is just off the coveted 50/40/90 split that all shooters want. He currently shoots 55%/43%/85%, which is good for over 20 points per game to go along with his 11 rebounds per contest. He is going to be the difference for Belmont.

The Terrapins are going to have their hands full with Windler and Belmont. The Bruins have a very high three-point attempt and three-point make offense. Belmont will have a healthy roster as center Nick Muszynski and his 2 blocks per game are ready to roll. The Belmont big man is going to have his hands full with Maryland bigs in Bruno Fernando and Jalen Smith. Maryland should exploit Belmont underneath the basket and feed the ball to Fernando and Smith the entire game. However, exchanging 2 for 3 is never a recipe for success. Maryland is on upset watch and the Terrapins have always struggled in postseason play under current head coach Mark Turgeon. The Terps could exploit this matchup but if Belmont is making shots early, much like Nebraska did in the Terps’ last game, Maryland is going to be in for a long day.
