Nebraska Basketball fell to TCU in the NIT. Unfortunately for head coach Tim Miles, the Cornhuskers have decided to move in another direction.
Nebraska Basketball and their Athletic Director Bill Moos have decided to pull the trigger and has fired head coach Tim Miles after seven seasons on the job. Miles led Nebraska for the last seven years and despite a surprise NCAA Tournament appearance in year two, the best Miles was ever able to do were back to back NIT appearances to end his tenure.
The former head coach did not have much of a support structure while at Nebraska as Moos was his third Athletic Director in his seven seasons. It is hard to build a consistent winner with no stability. No matter how you feel about Coach Miles he was fired because in the end he did not win enough games. In his time at Nebraska, Miles and the Huskers are only two games over .500 and he is 52-76 overall in the league.
The expectations at Nebraska are higher than they ever have been, which is thanks to Miles. He was able to recruit well enough to turn Nebraska into a contender, however for some reason he was never able to turn that into wins. In his two best seasons in 2014 and 2017 the Huskers were never able to meet the expectations the next season.
This season Nebraska had the highest expectations in school history, brought about by the 22-11 overall record in the 2017 season. The 2017 season under Miles was one of the greatest years in Nebraska and their minimal history. The 22 wins were the second most in school history and the 13 conference wins were the most in school history. Nebraska did not receive a bid to the NCAA tournament.
Now that Miles has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of Nebraska all of the attention turns to who the new coach is going to be for Nebraska. The Huskers have the facilities and fan support to take the program to the next level. Who Bill Moos hires as the new coach is going to be extremely important. If it is the wrong guy it could set the program back years and all of the goodwill that Miles did building the program to a relevant program will be for naught.
