SEC Basketball: Way-too-early 2019-20 preseason power rankings
By Dakota Cox
14. Vanderbilt Commodores
Unfortunately for Vandy fans, the Commodores find themselves exactly where they were for the majority of last year. When you can’t win a single game in your SEC schedule one year, you can’t expect much to change the following season.
However, some things will change, whether they are for the better or the worse for this franchise. Firstly, Simisola Shittu will not be on the team after he declared for the NBA Draft. This was a bold move by Shittu, a player many believe won’t be drafted. However, he seems determined to prove himself at a higher level.
Of course, Darius Garland will also be gone for the Commodores, but his early injury kept him from playing most of this year, so he doesn’t really factor into the equation.
The biggest change will be at head coach, where Vanderbilt has hired Jerry Stackhouse to reside. This is a bit of a question mark for the team. Stackhouse has some coaching experience, but none of it is at the college level. It will take time to see if he can recruit at a high enough level to keep up with others in the SEC. Even if he can’t, he will have some talent on the roster this year. Assuming that Saben Lee returns, he would be the best player by far on the roster. He will have to practically carry this team for them to have any success.
