TJ Holyfield

TJ Holyfield is a very good player who would have a chance to start if he were to come to Kansas. He is a versatile player who can impact the game in a variety of ways and would be a good fit alongside Udoka Azubuike.

The Jayhawks also have Mitch Lightfoot and David McCormack inside so he will have to earn his minutes, but he should be able to start over those two guys. They could take some minutes away from him, but Holyfield would play over them.

His role with Kansas is very much in question though and that has to do with the Silvio De Sousa appeal. He is currently suspended through next season by the NCAA, but if he gets reinstated he is expected to return to school and would likely start alongside Azubuike. Holyfield could still come to Kansas if that happens, but it seems unlikely since he has other appealing options.

Some of the other potential landing spots for him include Illinois and Texas Tech. We have all seen how well graduate transfers Matt Mooney and Tariq Owens played under Chris Beard at Texas Tech so that is a very intriguing option for him. He was also recruited to Stephen F. Austin by Brad Underwood who is the coach at Illinois so that could be a spot where he’s able to make a big impact.

TJ Holyfield was a three-year starter before he had to sit out the 2018-19 season due to injury. During the 2017-18 season, he averaged 12.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. He is a 38% three-point shooter on 1.7 attempts per game which is something that Kansas could desperately use despite the limited attempts. He has already visited Kansas and some of his schools so we could see a decision come rather quickly.
