While most of Nashville is busy with the NFL Draft, Vanderbilt Basketball head coach Jerry Stackhouse has been focused on recruiting.
Jordan Wright, a three-star shooting guard out of Baton Rouge, arrived in Nashville earlier this week for his official visit with Vanderbilt Basketball and was sold on what Jerry Stackhouse was doing with the program and is now ready to join the Commodores. Wright announced his commitment on Twitter Friday afternoon.
The No. 3 player in Louisiana now joins four-star Dylan Disu and three-star Scotty Pippen Jr. in the 2019 class. Stackhouse may be focusing on former NBA player’s sons as Kenyon Martin Jr., also has Vanderbilt in his final four teams.
Kenyon Martin Jr. is also a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 44 power forward by 247Sports for the Class of 2019. Both Pippen Jr. and Martin Jr. play together at Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California, so Pippen Jr. might be trying to talk Martin Jr. into heading to Nashville with him so they can stick together.
Stackhouse will still have some veteran leadership on this upcoming season’s squad as Saban Lee, and Aaron Nesmith will be returning next season for the Commodores. Simi Shittu, also a key contributor, could also return for next season if he decides to withdraw from the NBA draft process.
For the players who won’t be returning, Joe Toye graduated, Matt Ryan and Yanni Wetzell entered the transfer portal so unless Stackhouse can convince Ryan and Wetzell to stay they will be gone sometime this summer. Austin Crowley, a 2019 class signee, was granted his release from Vanderbilt after the Commodores fired Bryce Drew for going winless in the SEC.
Stackhouse looks to be using his experience in the NBA and the D-League to bring in former NBA star’s sons. This is something we haven’t really seen from a head coach at a major division-one university. Going after former NBA player’s sons could have its positives and negatives and bringing them together could lead to an interesting group of players.
