NBA Draft 2019: 3 picks that could exceed expectations in the pros
Here are three players that excelled at the college level and have NBA potential, but are not projected to go in the first round of the NBA draft.
This year in college hoops undoubtedly belonged to Zion Williamson, with a nice side-show from Ja Morant. This being said, not all great players are taken in the first round in the NBA Draft. Names like Khris Middleton and Nikola Jokic stand out in the modern NBA. Here are three players that will probably not get drafted in the first round despite having great NBA potential.
3. Tacko Fall
Tacko Fall received a lot of recognition for his performance against Duke in the tournament, but NBA teams are still not sold on the 7’6″ center from UCF. Despite being the first player this tall to enter the draft since Yao Ming, a lot has changed in the league since 2002 when he went first overall. Teams in the NBA rely heavily on the three-point shot to generate offense, and size means less than it once did. Despite all of this, Tacko Fall could still grow into an excellent defensive big with a strong post game similar to Steven Adams or Marc Gasol, you can’t teach height after all.
2. Ignas Brazdeikis
This guy had a breakout year for Michigan, showing proficiency as a scorer. While his numbers may not blow anyone away, anyone who watched this guy play can vouch for his talent. Projected to go in the second round, the 6’7″ forward will likely get an early opportunity to show his skills, depending on which team selects him. Brazdeikis has the shooting talent and athleticism to be a great NBA player, if he can continue develop his game.
1. Carsen Edwards
Edwards had one of the best scoring seasons in college basketball this year, averaging 24.3 points per game. He played his heart out in the tournament and displayed his ability to perform in the clutch. Anyone who watched the game against Virginia has already seen what he is capable of. In a league where the three-point shot and the ability to create shots is so valuable, it is honestly shocking Edwards is not projected for the first round. This is likely due to his height, and while he is short, he has the talent and hustle to become an elite player.
With all the great potential in this NBA draft class, it is not a big surprise that a few good players will fall to the second or third round. Be sure to keep an eye out for these players, along with others from this year as they get their start next year in the NBA. Who do you think will exceed expectations in this draft class?
